Dogs of the Past

bulletLady - my first dog
bullet   Lady started out her life with my family after my father's sister rescued her from a New Jersey shelter when Lady was estimated to be under the age of 6 months.  In the summer of 1965 my aunt and uncle traveled to Europe for 2 months, then moved to University of Chicago housing where pets were not allowed.  So Lady moved in with my parents, and the rest, as they say, is history.  Lady taught me how to behave around dogs, and she even put up with going along to my very first community dog show!  Lady lived to be about 17-years-old, and even until her final days, she was always a Lady.

bulletLexie - my first Belgian
bullet    Lexie came into my life after I convinced my parents that I needed a dog to get into vet school!  We attended the Purdue University Vet School Open House when I was in middle school and observed a dog obedience demonstration.  We had already decided on a Border Collie, but were intrigued by the brown dog in the ring.  We asked the owner what it was, and she promised to send us information about Belgian Tervuren.  She did just that, and included a note saying a puppy she had placed was now 8-months-old, spayed, and needed a new home.  So Lexie came to us!  The vet suggested obedience classes to deal with Lexie's deviant behaviors.  It was there I got my first real introduction to dog shows.  Lexie went on to earn her AKC CD, and was trained through utility, but died of a burst abdominal aortic aneurysm when she was just over 3-years-old.

Shortly after Lexie's death, I contacted her breeder who advised me of some related puppies in Texas.   I called their breeder and Pete landed at the Indianapolis airport a few days after my birthday in February 1985.  Pete did everything I asked of him, earning his CH, CD and ABTC HIC easily.  He was trained through Open obedience when he died from complications of bizarre intestinal problems.                                                           Pete.jpg (241404 bytes)
